Challenge: Cut Back On Added Sugar

Can't live without soda, cookies or processed snacks? Too much added sugar in your diet can contribute to weight gain, tooth decay and a host of other health problems. Challenge yourself to eliminate added sugars from your diet today. And don't forget to check those nutrition labels!

Day 01
0 /3 steps completed
  1. 1
    Have a sugar-free breakfast
Do you usually add a couple of sugars to your coffee? Skip 'em this morning -- and make sure the rest of your breakfast is free of added sugar.
  2. 2
    Have a sugar-free lunch
Thirsty? Say no to soda, sport drinks or sweet tea, and fill your glass with water instead. And watch out for sweetened sandwich bread!
  3. 3
    Have a sugar-free dinner
Be mindful of grain-based foods this evening. Many types of breads contain added sugar, so it's safer to steer clear.

Prep Steps & Tips

  • Beware hidden sugar

The nutrition label is your friend! Steer clear of anything with sugar as an ingredient, but also be on the lookout for other forms of the sweet stuff, such as high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, evaporated cane juice (or syrup), and agave nectar.

  • Eat outside the box (or wrapper)

Breakfast cereals and snacks -- even "healthy" ones -- often contain added sugars. Try switching to whole-food based breakfasts and snacks. Oatmeal, eggs, nuts, fruit, and carrot sticks are all excellent options.

  • Drink more water

Sweetened drinks -- including soda, ice teas, sports drinks, and some fruit juices -- are one of the biggest sources of added sugar in the typical diet. Eliminate this source by switching to water or seltzer.

  • Just say no to carbs

Grain-based desserts are the number-one food source of added sugar. Swap out those calorie-laden cupcakes and cookies with fresh fruit or flavored yogurt. Got a cookie craving you simply can't curb? Splurge on one sensational sweet treat purchased at a gourmet bakery.
