Here’s a surprise: Though unscientific, a small survey by Y Combinator partner Garry Tan shows that Tumblr, a light-blogging service, is in fact more popular than
Among teenagers, about 61% say they use Tumblr on a regular basis, compared with 55% for Facebook. The numbers are slightly lower for both for those aged 19 to 25.
After those two services, about three times fewer people in these age groups use Twitter and Instagram. Not surprisingly, Instagram is nearly as popular as Twitter among teens, and Snapchat — a hot app on the
App Store — is quickly gaining traction among teens.
But there is already a divide emerging between the 13 to 18 and 19 to 25 age group, Tan said in a blog post, with newer services like Instagram and Snapchat.
“The biggest differences were for Snapchat (13% for 13-18yr olds vs 4% for 19-25yr olds) and Instagram (21% vs 11%).”
Here’s his methodology: Tan used a Y Combinator company called Survata company and surveyed 1,038 people in two groups. There were 546 responses in a group aged 13-18 and 492 responses in a group aged 19-25. Tan asked which services they used regularly, defined by several hours per week or more. “Multiple answers were OK,” he said.
The survey does seems to suggest that the death of Facebook among teens and younger adults was “exaggerated,” with usage among those age groups far outstripping Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
